The problem

the Gulf energy operator's industrial facilities needed continuous security patrols, environmental anomaly detection, and personnel authorisation checks across routes that were repetitive and, in places, higher-risk for the people walking them. The real exposure sat in the gaps between manual rounds: an anomaly that appeared after one inspection was typically discovered at the next, and the observations that were made arrived as narrative reports rather than the time- and location-linked records a control room could act on.

What we built

We delivered an autonomous surveillance robot with self-charging and route-based patrols, combining environmental anomaly recognition, person detection, face identification, and ID-card authorisation with map-based incident reporting and a web interface for remote driving, zoom, and pan.

What it turned on

The safety benefit held because autonomy was deliberately conservative - weak face matches required human confirmation, loss of connectivity triggered a local safe behaviour, and blocked or unexpected routes were handled by remote control rather than forcing the robot to continue on its own. Relevant to operators of large industrial or energy sites where patrols are staffed continuously and the coverage gap between rounds is the actual risk.
