What is Agent-based automation?
Usually sold as agentic AI: a system that takes a sequence of actions towards a goal rather than answering one question at a time. The useful question is never whether it is agentic. It is what it is allowed to do without asking.
The word describes a shape, not a capability: the system decides what step to take next, calls something, reads the result, and decides again. That is genuinely more useful than a single answer for work that spans several systems - checking an invoice against a purchase order and a delivery note, for instance, then routing the mismatch to whoever owns it.
It is also where the interesting failure lives. A system that answers wrongly wastes a minute; a system that acts wrongly writes to a ledger. So the engineering that matters is not the loop, it is the boundary: which actions are reversible, which require a human signature, and whether every action it took is reconstructable afterwards. Any vendor who demonstrates the loop without showing you the boundary has shown you the easy half.

- When a proposal uses the word. Ask what the system is permitted to do unattended, and what happens when it is wrong. If those two answers are vague, the word is doing marketing work.
